My dear friends, this is a collection that you absolutely need to know! Today I will tell you about You Khanga, a brand of shoes and bags that combines Italian creativity with African culture.
Personally, I really love African prints and this is the factor that struck me first. The essence of this project is in the name: the khanga, in Equatorial Africa, is a rectangle of cotton printed in bright colors and decorated with phrases, proverbs and riddles auspicious written in Swahili. But for women in those areas it is also a way of life: because the khanga can be a dress or a hat, can serve to carry the kids on the back and even to decorate homes.
You Khanga is and idea of Veruscha Rossi, the owner of the brand native of Grosseto. In 2006 she moved to Malindi (Kenya) with her husband and, after having two children, in 2010 she decided to return to live in Italy. It is after this African experience that she started developing the idea of producing objects using the khanga and it’s thanks to the stylist Benedetta Ceppi, creative-director of YOU Khanga and regular traveler of Kenya and Malindi, that the two worlds – Africa and fashion – were able to join in something new.
Each creation by YOU khanga is unique for a simple reason: no khanga is the same as another. Of course fantasies of the tissues may resemble, but each rectangle fabric has its own personality. This is because for their production, in Kenya, no serial processing or laser techniques are used: so each piece is cut at a different point of cloth making, even slightly, every accessory unrepeatable.
You Khanga SS15 Collection
For the new season YOU Khanga offers two models of shoes (sandals and slippers) and two kind of purses (a shopping and a smaller shoulder bag).
The sandals have 10cm heels and are proposed in 10 different colors. Four lists of khanga, profiled in white leather, emphasize the silhouette of the foot, while the heel, covered, becomes the true protagonist.
The Tsavo bag, a tribute to one of the largest natural parks of Kenya, is a mini bag totally made in khanga, embellished with contrasting leather trim and shoulder strap in golden metal. Finally the Lamu bag, inspired by the popular Kenyan resort loved by the international jet set, is a handy, large shopping bag.
Finally, here is something that will make you love even more this brand. You Khanga actively contributes to the development of local populations in Africa: even packaging, for example, are made with khanga and are produced directly in a traditional way in Kenya. A portion of the proceeds from the purchase of the creations You Khanga is then donated to charity projects dedicated to women and children in Kenya, in particular to the support of orphanage Asante Sana Children’s home di Mambrui.
